THINGS WE DON’T REALISE ARE DESTROYING OUR PLUMBING

THINGS WE DON’T REALISE ARE DESTROYING OUR PLUMBING

Although common problems such as leaking taps and blocked drains are routine jobs for plumbers, malfunctioning plumbing caused by inappropriate usage of homeowners plumbing systems is also a common reason for being called out.

Here we have compiled a list of the top things that you should avoid doing to your plumbing:

  1. Using your toilet as a garbage can. Flushing something down the toilet won’t lead to it disappearing from the face of the earth. The pipes connected to your toilet also connect to the main pipes in your house’s plumbing, which can cause a blocked toilet to lead to failed plumbing in the entire house.
  2. Pouring chemicals down the drain. The immediate response to a blocked drain is usually to pour drain cleaner and other chemicals down the drain. When used sparingly, this can be a quick way to remove small clogs, but excessive use of these chemicals can not only corrode your drains, but also make the blockage worse.
  3. Putting anything else down the drain. People quite often treat their kitchen sinks as a place to get rid of leftovers and unused ingredients. Needless to say, unless you have a garbage disposal unit, this is inevitably going to create a blockage.
  4. Forgetting to replace hoses on white goods. Hoses on kitchen appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines can give up at any point, causing severe flooding and thousands of dollars in repair bills. It is a good idea to inspect these hoses 2 – 3 times a year and replace at least every five years. Another alternative is to buy no-burst hoses which are encased in a woven metal sleeve that avoids weak spots developing into leaks.
